Political Turmoil Erupts in Baharampur: Tensions Escalate Between Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and TMC

top-news

The political battleground in Baharampur, West Bengal, witnessed a dramatic confrontation as unidentified youths halted the car of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the West Bengal Congress president and a candidate running for re-election in the Lok Sabha constituency. The incident, marked by “go back” slogans and alleged drunken behavior, has sparked a fierce blame game between Chowdhury and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), adding fuel to the already intense electoral fire.

Chowdhury, visibly incensed by the incident, wasted no time in pointing fingers at the TMC, citing a pattern of disruptive tactics dating back to last year’s civic polls. “This is nothing but a ploy to stop me. The local TMC is behind this. They want people not to work for the Congress party. This is the same thing they had done during the civic polls last year,” he exclaimed, accusing the TMC of orchestrating the disturbance to hinder his campaign efforts.

Describing the encounter with the youths, Chowdhury painted a picture of chaos and organized disruption. “They were yelling: Go back, go back!! I stopped and asked them what their complaints were. Initially, only one person was there, but then several others joined him. I realized that it was organized by the TMC. But they would not be able to stop me in this way,” he asserted, displaying his determination in the face of adversity.

Seeking swift action, Chowdhury informed the district superintendent of police about the incident, urging intervention to curb such disruptive activities. However, the situation took a more heated turn as the TMC retaliated with a video showing Chowdhury allegedly slapping a youth, labeling it as “sheer display of hooliganism” and accusing him of using muscle power to intimidate TMC workers.

The battle lines have been drawn as the TMC fields former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan against Chowdhury, a seasoned politician who has held the Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency since 1999. With the polls scheduled for May 13, tensions are running high, and the clash between these political heavyweights promises to be a defining moment in West Bengal’s electoral landscape.
